Anthropic's $30 Trillion Claim: Inside the Numbers Behind the IPO Pitch

Anthropic is reportedly telling IPO investors its market opportunity tops $30 trillion, beating SpaceX's own record-breaking claim. Here's what the number actually means, and why it matters for AI hiring.

Anthropic is reportedly preparing to tell investors that its total addressable market exceeds $30 trillion. According to the Wall Street Journal, the figure is set to top the $28.5 trillion opportunity Elon Musk's SpaceX presented to investors ahead of its own listing earlier this year, and it's not far off the entire GDP of the United States.

For a company that pulled in roughly $11.6 billion in a single quarter, a $30 trillion number understandably raises eyebrows. But the story behind it says a lot about where Anthropic, and the wider AI industry, believes this is heading.

What Anthropic is actually claiming

The $30 trillion figure is a total addressable market, or TAM, the theoretical annual revenue a company could generate if it captured 100% of every market it operates in. It is not a forecast of what Anthropic expects to earn. To build the number, the company is reportedly looking at the full scope of work that could plausibly be completed using AI models, pricing itself against the value of human labour the technology could eventually replace or augment, rather than just software subscriptions and API usage.

That is a notably bigger swing than the pitch AI companies were making even a year or two ago. Back then, the story was "we sell access to models." Now, under co-founders Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei, the story is closer to "we are sized against the global economy."

Dario Amodei, Anthropic's CEO, has previously been candid about how frothy some of the industry's spending and forecasting has become, telling reporters that some of the infrastructure announcements coming out of AI right now are "kind of frothy." Daniela Amodei, the company's president, has focused on the commercial engine behind that growth, and Anthropic's revenue has scaled fast under her watch, reportedly heading toward $34.5 billion in a bullish 2027 scenario, with a more conservative base case closer to $12 billion. Either way, that's a long way short of $30 trillion.

The SpaceX comparison, and why it matters

The Musk connection isn't incidental. SpaceX told investors ahead of its IPO that it had identified the "largest actionable TAM in human history," attributing the bulk of that $28.5 trillion figure to AI-related opportunity rather than rockets or satellites. Anthropic's reported $30 trillion figure would edge that out, making it, on paper, the largest TAM claim ever put in front of public market investors.

Valuation experts have already flagged that SpaceX's number was "reaching the end of what's plausible and pushing beyond it." Anthropic's claim goes further still. For context, FactSet data shows the 191 technology companies that make up the S&P 1500 generated a combined $2.4 trillion in revenue last year, less than a tenth of the market Anthropic is reportedly pointing to.

None of this is happening in a vacuum. Anthropic is said to be targeting a valuation of around $2 trillion and could look to raise as much as $100 billion in its IPO, both of which would surpass what SpaceX achieved when it went public in June at a $1.77 trillion valuation, having raised $86 billion. A prospectus is expected soon, with a possible market debut as early as September or October.

A number built to do a job

A TAM this large does a specific job. It justifies a sky-high valuation and the enormous infrastructure spend behind it. It frames Anthropic's rivalry with OpenAI and Google as a race for a genuinely civilisation-scale market rather than a software niche. And it gives investors a growth story big enough to support the IPO Anthropic is racing to get out ahead of its rivals.

Whether regulators, analysts and public market investors accept a number that assumes 100% capture of a market the size of a national economy is another question entirely. The ambition behind it, pricing AI not as a product category but as a replacement for the way work itself gets done, is the real headline here.

Why this matters for hiring

Big claims from frontier labs rarely stay contained to the IPO desk. When a company the size of Anthropic frames its opportunity in the trillions, it puts pressure on every business building around, on top of, or in response to that technology, including the tech, digital, cyber and Web3 companies we work with every day at Priority Tech. That's part of why every company suddenly wants AI talent, not just AI-native ones. Compensation expectations rise, specialist AI talent gets harder to reach, and businesses without a clear AI story start to lose ground in the market for the people who can actually build it, as we saw play out around Synthesia's $4bn valuation earlier this year.

Whatever you make of Anthropic's $30 trillion figure, the signal underneath it is clear: demand for people who can build, secure and scale AI systems is only heading in one direction. If you're building out that capability, our tech and AI recruitment services are a good place to start. Big numbers make headlines. Getting the hire right is what actually moves a business forward.
